We were very interested in this India-themed treatment of Jane Austen's famous novel "Pride and Prejudice," since we have rather gotten onto "Bollywood" movies and Georgie particularly is an Austen fan. Gurinder Chadha, director of the sucessful "Bend It Like Beckham" was able to fund this return to her extravagant roots based on that success. This is also a success. It is big, it is beautiful, it is faithful to the Austen spirit, and the music and dancing is infectious as well, although I don't expect any hit songs to come out of it. Note: for the uninitiated, almost any big "Bollywood" picture contains an obligatory number of singing, dancing production numbers, which add a dlightful level of surreality to the Western viewer. The "east meets west" dynamic adds a bit of modern-day reality to the theme of class-conciousness that was such an important issue in Austen's day, but has become less so in purely western society. Highly recommended.
