Moriarty and Me

I had had a tip from one of the directors of “Beauty and the Beast” that the Village Playhouse of Wauwatosa was going to do “Sherlock Holmes,” the play by William Gillette and Arthur Conan Doyle, as their spring show, so I was Johnny-on-the-spot when in came time for auditions in mid-January. I trotted out my array of British accents (besides the principals, there are a number of characters ranging from Cockney crooks to English lords) and was very pleased to be given the part of Professor James Moriarty, Holmes’ “most ruthless enemy”, as Watson describes him in the play. Not only is it a fun and pivotal role, I get a charge of the fact that there can’t be too many actors that have played both Holmes (as I did, in the West Allis Player’s “Hound of the Baskervilles”) and his nemesis. The show goes on March 5 & 6, and 12 &13 at the Faith United Church of Christ, 4240 N. 78th St., Milwaukee, WI.
